1.  If the surface of a finished pot is a little like chalk, you need to drop faster between 2200-1700 degrees and you will get smoother surfaces. Achieve this fast drop by opening peep holes. Put peeps back in when you hit 1700.

2.  Another reason the surface of pots is too rough:  you may have put on the SCM too thickly
