Kalamazoo Feb. 2024: Stacked Forms
Altered &
Hand Built

Suze Lindsay Notes (Fork Mountain Pottery, Bakersville, NC)

  • if you are going to make oval pieces, use your caliper to measure stackable pieces WHILE THEY ARE ROUND.

  • use paper to form sculpture of stackable pieces

  • "cup tree" form to hold cups! Tray with trunk forms and small "plates" to hold each cup.

  • Stackable place settings is an idea! Start on bottom with a saucer>cup>dessert plate>dinner plate>salad plate> soup mug on top!

  • - every 4 years Arrowmont has Utilitarian Clay Conference. 200 people max.

  • -Women Working in Clay Conference is small, maybe in Roanoke.?

  • experiment with how bottomless forms look different when thrown as a small-based conical bowl,a parallogram with inward slanting sides, and paddled to make a rectangle.

  • you can use brushed liquid slip on anything but then need a translucent or clear glaze over it. Black slip on white porcelain is beautiful.

  • -use a level!!

  • -uses darting extensively. Puts mini coils behind each dart. John Glick may be the first to use darts

  • -use thin foam sheet or bubble wrap to line a chuck when trimming to protect rims

  • -Suze attaches feet to side of piece

  • -Bruce Pine Potter's Show near Bakersville, NC. Town is FULL of potters! LikeSea grove NC

  • -Dr. Lisa Miller podcast

  • -The Awakened Brain

  • - book = The Book ofAwakening

  • -liquid or brushable slip: wax surface, carve your pattern into the waxed surface ,then brush slip over it

  • Straw bristle brush makes great lines with slip

  • -dot a pot with slipusing your finger=finger dots

  • -use the long pointed brushes with slip!

  • -**Great "orama" exercise for surface design, Linda Arbuckle says line-draw your pot 5 times ( or once and then copy it in a copier). Then draw arrows inside drawings to decide what you want to emphasize. Pick one. Then draw 5 more with motifs replacing arrows.

  • -"orama" idea= "know your brushes". Newsprint and decorating brushes you own. LEARN what each brush does! Start with 3 good brushes you don't know much about

  • -Allen Caiger Smith YouTube British potter with brushstroke lesson
